Have I said yet that Kevin was a champ driving the RV?? He was.
We took it up the twisty, curvy, veeeery high up Trail Ridge Road one day.
The elevation rises from just over 8,000 feet near our campground to 12,000 at the highest point along the road. Pretty crazy that the road was even built. And it is way high up! I am not a fan of heights--there were quite a few moments where I was white knuckled, holding my seat & looking away. Some sheer drop offs...
But we made it to the top and the Alpine Village Ranger Station where the boys got to see some snow (above), and we got to watch a herd of elk stroll the ridge line just below the clouds.
Not a bad view from up in the clouds.
Then we took a short hike at the highest point in the road (12,000 feet & gained another 200 along the 1/2 mile hike). This was along the alpine tundra. Click on the picture below to enlarge it & see the road winding along the top of the ridge. Keenan and I took our time strolling to the top in the thin air...
Then the boys climbed up for an even higher view.....
See the tiny blue flowers? Pretty interesting eco-system up there. Some of the lichens can live for thousands of years. Then we made it back to the RV & enjoyed a lunch while watching this guy out our window....
It's a yellow bellied marmot.
Pretty fun huh?
