Reptiles & Jewels

We headed out of the Badlands and back to the Black Hills.
But first we made a second detour to Wall Drug for some more homemade donuts (delish!) and the nickel coffee.  Then before we made it to our campground (which was the least favorite KOA on steroids) we made another detour to the Reptile Gardens in Rapid City.  They have snakes galore, and quite a few that my in-house snake experts have never seen before.  All kinds of venomous ones.
And a snake show, and some good 'ole gator wrestling...

This is a galapagos tortoise.  Kieran was in heaven.
The other cave we visited and briefly toured was Jewel Cave National Monument.  We planned on taking a longer tour but didn't plan well enough, so we got the short one instead.  We did get to listen to a Ranger program on caving though which the boys loved.  Like nearby Wind Cave, they are still exploring Jewel Cave and we got to watch some people get ready for a 4 hour cave exploration tour.  Kevin & Kieran were eyeing them with a tad of envy.  In order to go on the tour you have to be able to squeeze through here:
 Kieran, check.
 Keenan, check.
 Kevin, not so fast.
Me, check.  Not that I really want to spend for hours in a cave on my belly though.
But then we got down there & saw this.  All over the place.  Rooms & rooms of walls & ceilings lined with "jewels."  Beautiful.
