We left the Badlands this morning.
Without a doubt that is one of the most stunning places I've seen. I think I like environments with stark contrasts-Bryce Canyon is another of my favorites & the desert southwest. In the Badlands you have rolling prarie grasslands on one side of the highway (which smelled divine), and jagged, striped, sandstone peaks & gorges along the other. The colors change throughout the day & sunset is incredibly beautiful.
Stunning.
(You will see a lot of pictures. Kevin also loved it too--more from a geology perspective)
Last night was another wonky weather night.
It was HOT yesterday! Then last night then winds blew in again (gusts enough to shake the RV) and we had a front row seat to a crazy, and long, lightning show. We were thankful not to be any closer to that storm. The lightning went on for miles & lit up the sky better than a Hollywood special effects crew could. (We were thankful to be in our RV & not in a tent....saw one get blown down last night & could not imagine how noisy that would have been.)
And what a difference a day makes.
Today we are back in the Black Hills area. And it is in the 60's for the high. Right now I'm snuggled under a blanket while I type....even Kevin is chilly. Can't even see the boys....
Tomorrow we rent a car to explore some more and check out Mt. Rushmore.
The boys are hooked on Jr. Ranger programs and so far are up to seven badges.
We found out today that there was a nasty wildfire in Guernsey State Park yesterday--they had to evacuate all the campers. We were there a few nights ago (not good memories for me--my least favorite place by far) and as we left that morning had a haze of smoke from a different forest fire burning.... a mere 30 miles away.
Thankful for safety.
I miss the campground at the Badlands. The wind in the cottonwoods & smell of the grasses blowing.
The one we are at is like a KOA on steroid.
Too big, too loud, too noisy...
But it's all part of the adventure, right?
And I wouldn't trade it for the world.
Love the RV.
