England & Hadrian

We woke up on the farm to blue sky and sunshine again.  And after enjoying a lovely breakfast with a couple from South Africa, we packed up and headed to our next stop.
The northern outpost of the Roman Empire, Hadrian's Wall:

The wall stretched from the North Sea to the Irish Sea.  Across Scotland.
Some portions are more earthen mounds now, others are in ruins, and others are being excavated and preserved.  We stopped at one small section near Birdoswold Fort.
Once it was constructed, the fort was one of many military outposts along the wall.
Now several farms share the property.
It's also one of the longest stretches of the Wall remaining.
One day it would be nice to return and walk the length of the wall.  We saw several people doing just that.

There was a nice little display area that gave good history of the area.  How it would have been before the Roman's arrived, the building & construction of the wall, how they patrolled & defended the area, and life after the fall of the Roman empire.
Antonine's wall (that we had visited the day before) was constructed to use more as a trade outpost.
Both the boys have recently studied Roman history, so the chance to see part of the Roman empire was pretty cool.

After we finished at the fort, we went over to a nearby Priory.
They had a teashop in the converted stable yard.
It was an excellent choice.
Hello sticky toffee pudding!
We relaxed and enjoyed our snack, then explored the priory area.

The priory was established in the late 12th century, well after the fall of Rome.
It's still in use today, although undergoing renovations.
We enjoyed a gorgeous stroll around the grounds...
 and the cemetary....
before cruising past the Lake District (gorgeous views)
to our stop for the evening.
The Lodge in Slyne, Lancaster England.
Another favorite stay, and meal.
