The Bells

A favorite Christmas song has always been "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day."
A few years ago I looked up the lyrics.
The poem was written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow while the country was in the midst of the Civil War.  He wrote it Christmas morning after his eldest son returned from fighting and was seriously wounded.  His wife had died a few years prior after being burned in an accidental fire.  He grew his beard to cover his facial scars from trying to save his wife.
But in the midst of his grief, uncertainty, and the turmoil throughout the country....he wrote this poem.
And even in his pain, he has hope.
"Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
God is not dead nor does He sleep;
the wrong shall fail, the right prevail,
with peace on earth, good-will to men."

So much pain in our country now too.
But the words are still true.
